Clarification of FOCUS Social Media Moderation Policy

Recent activity on social media has highlighted an example of FOCUS deleting a Member’s post for inappropriate content.

FOCUS supports a team of moderators who monitor conversations on the FOCUS Facebook page and intervene when necessary. These volunteers are working incredibly hard to keep the online FOCUS community safe, supportive and a fun place to learn from others and discuss a vast range of photography related topics.

Part of that responsibility involves insisting that the first rule in the FOCUS Facebook terms and conditions is upheld. That rule is “No selling is allowed on this page at all”.

Not everyone likes or agrees with that rule, but it was put in place after Members lost money.

FOCUS is supported by a number of Sponsors and approved Trip and Education providers. These individuals and businesses are approved because they get involved with the Focus community and give generously with their time and commitment to helping photographers at all levels to progress.

FOCUS endorses their products and services in exchange for the benefits they offer our Members, including price discounts, special promotions and events, and prizes for monthly competitions and the annual FOCUS Awards – now one of the most popular and most valuable amateur landscape photography competitions in Australia.

We support people who support our community. Focus takes no money from these providers – all the benefits go directly to Members.

Other professional photographers and photography equipment brands are welcome to join the FOCUS community on the same terms as our existing Sponsors and Approved Providers.

If the moderators see an example of unauthorised marketing or promotion on the FOCUS Facebook page, they will politely ask for it to be removed. If the Member does not comply, the moderators will remove the post, and in serious cases remove the Member from the Focus community.

FOCUS is a not-for-profit body and an enthusiastic community of photographers who, while striving to improve their own skills, also lend support to others. Achieving this vision requires goodwill, energy and commitment from many hundreds of Focus Members who volunteer their time and contribute their knowledge and share their skills freely.

The FOCUS Committee is committed to maintaining a safe and supportive online environment for its Members, and stands behind our team of moderators.
