Focus – Shooting for the Stars Astrophotography Workshop – Narooma with Luke Tscharke & Jay Evans

Join Luke Tscharke and Jay Evans on an exciting astrophotography workshop based in Narooma, on the South Coast of New South Wales. You will be treated to three nights and two full days (four days total) of dedicated astrophotography coaching and tuition, both in the field during capture and back at the accommodation including post processing sessions. With ideal tides and timing for dark night skies this workshop will help you take your astrophotography to the next level. Whilst we can’t guarantee clear skies to capture the stars (keep your fingers crossed!), the Narooma area offers some amazing locations for photography, where we will also photograph at sunrise and sunset. Itinerary includes:

Horsehead Rock
Camel Rock
On location coaching
Image processing classes

DATES: Thursday May 26th 2016 to Sunday May 29th 2016
Trip departs and returns to Central Station, Sydney.

GROUP SIZE: Maximum 10 participants, minimum 6.

FITNESS LEVEL: A moderate level of fitness is required to walk along rocky coastlines

ABOUT THE LEADERS
Luke Tscharke is an international award winning photographer, winning the 2015 Focus Photographer of the Year, International Landscape Photograph of the Year, and 2015 Monochrome Photographer of the Year. In 2015 Luke had several astrophotographs published in Australian Geographic, including the magazine cover of issue 126, and he also wrote an article for Australian Geographic on photographing the Milky Way. Luke specialises in composing and capturing wide field Milky Way images.

Jay Evans is a highly experienced astrophotographer with an obsession for wide field Milky Way images and timelapse, and specialises in star trail capture techniques and processing. Jay runs the Night & Astrophotography Enthusiasts group on Facebook and Meetup, organising monthly group astro shoots at easy to reach dark sky locations around Western Sydney, Central and South Coast, and the Blue Mountains. With a passion for ecotourism, Jay also hosts immersive Star Trail workshops in the Blue Mountains which have been well received by others. Attendees have developed their passion for the night sky and the wilderness with Jay’s education.

WHAT YOU CAN LEARN

Whether you are just starting your journey in photography, or are looking to further develop your astrophotography skills, Luke and Jay’s hands on training will help you take your image-making to the next level. Even if the weather does not allow us to photograph the stars (keep your fingers crossed!) you will still go home with sunrise and sunset images, and your mind bursting with astrophotography knowledge. The workshop will cover skills such as:

How to plan astrophotography shoots, using phone apps and other applications
How to photograph in the dark safely, and general seascape safety advice
Essential gear and equipment to capture stunning night images
How to set up your camera to capture the Milky Way
How to focus and compose images in the dark
Photographing star trails and timelapses from capture to post processing

WHAT TO BRING

The workshop will take place on one of the most rugged and spectacular coastlines in Australia. You will need to be prepared as we will be accessing rock shelves at the ocean in the dark.

ESSENTIAL ITEMS

Head torch (with new batteries)
Good quality rock hopping boots or hiking boots that you don’t mind getting wet
Camera
Lenses suitable for astrophotography (feel free to contact Luke or Jay for advice)
Remote timer for camera
Sturdy Tripod
