NSW-ACT Alpine and Sub-Alpine Huts

DIFFICULTY RATING: Depending on the location accessibility may range from very easy, ie 100 metre walk from your car to very hard,  involving long hikes over harsh terrain. Weather and time of year are important factors when planning a visit to the huts and even on a sunny day ensure you pack for the harshest weather as conditions can dramatically change in minutes.

Description : Below you will find a listing of all the huts managed by the Kosciuszko Huts Association. They are a voluntary organisation chartered to assist in the conservation and management of huts in the Kosciuszko National Park and Namadgi National Park. An example of a hut/homestead that Focus has visited on more than one occasion is Orroral Homestead, located about 30 minutes outside of Canberra in the Namadgi National Park. Orroral is a big homestead that dates back to the 1860s and also contains a woolshed and stockyard which were built in the 1930s.

Orroral can be accessed by traveling on the Canberra-Adaminaby road and is situated about 250 metres from your parking spot on Orroral Road. Perhaps the best time to visit the homestead is in winter on a foggy or frosty morning or if you’re lucky after a snow storm that does come through the area once or twice a year. There are many compositions where you can incorporate the the homestead. woolshed or stockyard. There’s rocky outcrops and dead trees too. If you are driving early in the morning or late in the evening in the area, be on the lookout for kangaroos as they tend to eat the grasses alongside the road.
